(voice 1)
out here on witch island
me and my mom sort our little pills
waves crash on witch island
watching as the rain falls
(voice 2)
wasting away waiting on witch island
it's a losing game
we stand on the shoreline
living our lives waiting on witch island
watching the rain brush over the grass and trees
(voice 3)
swallowing our pills
me and mom
watching waves crash
swallowing our pills
me and mom
watching rain fall
a little 14 minute EP i made between dec 2 2021 and jan 11 2022, 3 accompanying illustrations (included in download) made between jan 19 and jan 26 2022. intended to be listened to with headphones.
this is the first serious attempt at music i've made in a couple years, and the first music i've released since around high school. i made it while i was starting college and hormone therapy. 2021 was a wild year because i realized i can actually be an artist and making this visual album feels like the culmination of that journey. now that i have it out of my system i can work on the things i've wanted to make since mid 2020.
i used ableton live lite to write the music; it only allows for 6 MIDI tracks and has a very limited selection of instruments, most of which sound really awful. i ended up using only about 8 instruments on the whole EP, and made a rule that i wasn't allowed to use percussion or 4/4 time signature, so most of the songs are slow waltzes and a couple are in 5/4 or 5/8. i'm definitely switching to FL studio after this because i have the license.
the illustrations were made in photoshop with a mix of found images, original drawings and flat textures sculpted into objects.
this EP is about a kind of sad island where i wouldn't want to live personally. there's a lot of natural wonders but the longer you hang around there you start to feel upset about your presence on this planet. i talk about pills in the one song with lyrics; it's less a pill as an object or psychoactive substance and more a grounding ritual you use to keep living. the illustrations are kind of about solidarity in fear.
